PROJECT: Robot Customization Project

GOAL

Customizing Your Robot is designed to follow Robot Project One: Building A Robot and to allow participants to use and explore the skills and tools they already have while adding a few new ones that let them create a truly unique robot of their own design.

    What are your favorite robots and what shapes make them up? Take a look at these cool robots and think about the shapes that make them unique or functional. Following are examples of tools that can be used to modify your robot or the provided robot model. This project is intended for you to explore your creativity and the skills you have built to create your very own creation.

  • Rotate Tool Example

    Delete your head object. Insert a cylinder object. Select the cylinder. Select the Move tool. Rotate the view to make it easier to see the axis that you want to rotate around. Select handle associated with the circle you want to rotate on. Drag the cylinder till it rotates 90 degrees or on quarter turn. You can also type in the number of degrees you want to rotate the object. Scale and Move the cylinder to desired location.

  • Tweak Tool Point Example

    Select the hip object of the robot. Hover over the object to see the different parts of the shape highlight. You will see the different points, edges and faces highlight separately. Select a point when highlighted. Hold shift and select another point to highlight more than one point. Select tweak in the submenu. Use the move tool controls to manipulate the points. See the tool tips section for examples of manipulating edges and faces or play around with them yourself.

  • Fillet Tool Example

    Select the arm object. Hover over the object to see the components highlight. Select an edge. Select the fillet tool from the submenu. Use the arrow tool to manipulate the depth of the fillet. Confirm by pressing enter or clicking off of the object. Use escape key to cancel. Repeat using the shift key to select multiple edges and repeat the manipulation to fillet all of the edges of the arm.

  • Chamfer Tool Example

    Select the shoulder object. Hover over the object to see the components highlight. Select an edge. Select the chamfer tool from the submenu. Use the arrow tool to manipulate the depth of the chamfer. Use the shift key to select multiple edges and repeat the manipulation to fillet all of the edges of the shoulder. Confirm by pressing enter or clicking off of the object. Use escape key to cancel.

  • Draw Tool Example

    Delete the torso component of your robot. Select the Draw Polyline tool from the top menu. Select the starting place of your line on the grid. Draw a shape connecting back to your starting point. Click the green checkmark to confirm your shape. Rotate your view to better manipulate your shape. Select your shape and select extrude from the submenu. Use the arrow to extrude your shape to the desired depth (as shown in the example you may need to change your view for the extrude to be successful). See tool tips for other drawing tool tutorials.

  • Import SVG Example

    Import SVG as sketch. Use the move tool to bring the imported shape closer to your robot object. Select the shapes you desire and select extrude from the submenu. Drag extrude arrow or type in desired depth. Hide the sketch using the hide sketch option in the side menu. Group the object if it is composed of multiple pieces. Select the object and use the move tool to align the object to desired depth. USe the scale and move tools to size and position the object. Pictured here is the use of this process for creating a custom detail on the robot. This process could also be used to import and extrude body components of the robot.

This project file can be used to skip the first robot project (not recommended) or in case the previous project file is lost or you did not save before combining all of the components.
